Reckless Serenade

Strange Soul

InVogue Records

Release Date: June 17, 2016

Hailing from upstate New York, Reckless Serenade have been making a name for themselves over the past few years. The Pop Punk moniker fits them, but not snuggly as there are plenty of musically heavy moments as well as a dash of Emo here and there.

“With Friends Like These” is head and shoulders my favorite moment here. It encapsulates all of the band’s dynamics into one big ball of fury that reminds me a bit of the old Vincent Black Shadow stuff. The verses roll right over you in skanking kinda way, but the band doesn’t shy away from Emo-ish breakdowns and roarin’ choruses. I think what draws me so much to the song is the fact that it shouldn’t really work but the band keeps it all on cue without ever missing a beat. “Fool’s Gold” is another favorite with its big, stuttering guitars, soaring choruses, and Pop Punk background vocals. “Poltergeist” on the other hand, embraces the full Pop Punk experience offering short burst solos and a big, positive musical vibe.

Overall, this is a fun EP. I don’t think that Reckless Serenade are breaking any new ground, but they are plenty good at big guitar and big chorus goodness. If you enjoy what bands like New Found Glory and Good Charlotte evolved into in their later years then you should definitely check out Strange Soul. Also, don’t miss them on the 2016 Warped Tour all summer long!
